Sea Kayak Guide
Butterfly Tours may have positions available for professional assistant sea kayak guides on summer 2022 Haida Gwaii tours and expeditions. We are accepting applications from certified guides interested in training to join our team.
Our apprentice program is a unique and inspiring work-training opportunity. There are a limited number of positions available each summer. Apprentice guides may be initially scheduled to work a single trip. By working proficiently during their first trip, an apprentice may then be invited to continue working successive trips.
Our trips are guided by Gord and an assistant guide. An apprentice guide becomes the third certified guide on a trip.
Butterfly Tours invests considerably in transporting, outfitting and training each guide. Apprentice guides benefit by becoming familiar with the refined and renowned "Butterfly way" of kayak touring. Guide training originates with Gord, the most experienced sea kayak guide in Gwaii Haanas National Park.
Apprentice guides are provided with earnings that reflect the internship aspects of the position. Completing an apprenticeship may lead to advancement and future employment as a Butterfly Tours assistant guide.
Guides must obtain a Gwaii Haanas registered guide card, issued by Parks Canada. This guide card, combined with the practical experience of working with the Butterfly team, can make a guide highly employable.
Parks Canada requires Gwaii Haanas kayak guides to hold valid certification. Butterfly Tours will consider applicants who qualify for certification with the ACSKG - Association of Canadian Sea Kayak Guides.
SKGABC certified Assistant Overnight Guides and Paddle Canada Level Two Instructors are generally considered equivalent to ACSKG Assistant Guides and may apply to transfer to the ACSKG. Transferring certification is a simple process for guides who qualify. Guides can apply to Butterfly Tours before transferring to the ACSKG.
Some training institutions offer their students "SKGABC Level One" certification. SKGABC Level One is a day-guide certificate and does not qualify a guide to transfer to the ACSKG, or to work on multi-day trips in Gwaii Haanas. Butterfly Tours requires apprentice guides to hold current ACSKG certification. SKGABC Assistant Overnight Guide certification is a minimum requirement for transferring to the ACSKG. Students may benefit from encouraging their course provider to become ACSKG accredited.
Alternatively, prospective guides may qualify for ACSKG certification by attending Evolution Guide School, or another accredited guide course. With the proper prerequisites and preparations, it is possible to take the Gwaii Haanas Evolution course and transition directly into the Butterfly Tours apprentice program.
Butterfly Tours assistant and apprentice guides must qualify for an ACSKG certificate. Butterfly Tours covers annual ACSKG certification fees for our guiding team.
