Apprentice Program

Butterfly Tours is accepting applications from certified assistant sea kayak guides who are interested in apprenticing with us on Haida Gwaii during 2012.  The unpaid apprentice position may lead to paid employment as an assistant guide during the summer of 2013 and beyond...

Butterfly Tours invests considerably in transporting, outfitting and training each guide.  Apprentice guides are requested to contribute CAD $200 to join their first trip.  By working proficiently during their first trip, an apprentice may be invited to join consecutive trips at no additional charge.  If an apprentice is later hired by Butterfly Tours, a $200 bonus is applied to their first paycheque.

The $200 investment has been implemented to ensure apprentice guides are truly interested in training to work with Butterfly Tours, rather than simply enjoying a free kayak trip on Haida Gwaii.

Trips are guided by Gord.  In 2012, the assistant guide is Jamie - returning for his third season with Butterfly Tours.  An apprentice guide becomes the third guide on a trip.

There are a very limited number of apprentice guide positions available each year.  Butterfly Tours requires a 100% commitment from each apprentice guide.  Before committing, be sure this apprenticeship is truly what you want; the $200 fee is payable in advance and is not refunded if an apprentice later changes their mind.

There are numerous additional prerequisites and qualifications.  Parks Canada requires guides to become registered, please contact Gord to request the Parks Canada application.
